It isn't always easy to know when it's time for your roof to be replaced. Sometimes it takes looking into certain things or recognizing some less-common signs that the time may have come. The important thing is to realize when this time has come, no matter how you come about it, and have the roof replaced before you end up dealing with serious issues. Here are some things that can indicate that roof replacement should be done soon:

Your neighbors are getting new roofs

If you live in a neighborhood where all the houses were built around the same time, then the homes that have the same type of roofs as your house will likely need to have their roofs replaced at around the same time. So, if you are noticing your neighbors are having their roofs replaced, then you should consider having your roof replaced.

Another reason why you may see a number of your neighbors having their roofs replaced around the same time can be due to storm damage from a recent storm. If there's been a storm, and you see these roof replacements taking place around your neighborhood, then you should have a roofer come inspect your roof to make sure it's still in good shape.

The granules are coming off the shingles

Granules are on roofing shingles to help protect the asphalt from the sun. The granules should last for around the same amount of time as the shingles do. Therefore, if you are seeing a lot of granules coming from the roof, then this can indicate that the roof is in need of replacement.

It's normal to see a few granules, especially after a storm that can be responsible for knocking some of them off. However, you don't want to see that there is a collection of them on the ground under the edges of the roof regularly. Also, you can often find quite a collection of granules in the rain gutters when the roof is near its end. This is why you should be checking the rain gutters once in a while, so you don't miss this red flag letting you know it's time to replace your roof.

The shingles are starting to curl

The shingles on your roof should maintain the same look over time. If you notice they are looking different, then this lets you know something has changed. They aren't going to improve over time but will become older and weaker over time. Therefore, changes can indicate you need the roof replaced.

One of the changes you may notice going on with the shingles can be that they are starting to curl. As soon as you notice some shingles curling, you want to have a roofer come out to see if the roof needs to be replaced, so you can catch things before you end up with worse problems that can include leaks in the house.
